They were all adopted! Real life icon’s such as Babe Ruth, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Cher were also in foster care at one time. These fictional and real life Superheroes prove that with the help of others, each of us can achieve great things!
Friends of Children of Brevard, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to provide for the unmet needs of abused, neglected or abandoned children in Brevard County is hosting the 4th Annual SuperHero Run (5K & 1K, Kids’ Fun Run and Mascot Race) at the Avenue Viera on Saturday, February 6th. The run offers complimentary food and drinks for all participants, awards for Top 3 Teams, 56 medals awarded in 18 categories, and most importantly, lots of Superhero-themed fun for a fantastic cause. We are running the roads this year, with a new course starting at the Avenue Viera.
When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help them. That volunteer is called a Guardian Ad Litem or GAL. GAL of Brevard County trains and supports volunteers to represent and advocate for a child’s best interest in the dependency system. GAL volunteers serve as the “eyes and ears” for the judge in child welfare cases. Our volunteers are often the most stable presence in these children’s lives as they navigate the foster care system. Currently, Brevard County has over 1000 children appointed to the Guardian Ad Litem program. Friends of Children of Brevard supports the GAL program and the children assisted by these volunteers. When a child leaves their home without a backpack, shoes, toys or wants to go to Summer Camp, our Guardians call
Friends for financial support. Friends has been helping these child achieve normalcy since 1985 and relies on donations and fundraisers to make this happen. Now is your chance to give back to the community, help support these children and have fun being a Superhero too!
Whether you are a competitive runner, a casual walker, or just love the idea of supporting a wonderful cause, participating in the Friends Superhero Run allows you to show your support for abused and neglected children in Brevard County. Can’t participate? Consider sponsoring a foster child for a $20 donation. Every child needs a hero… abused children need SUPERHEROES.
