About Friends of Children of Brevard

Children do not ask for a life of abuse and neglect.

In the life of every child, there should be at least one adult that stands as his or her hero. Usually, that hero is Mom or Dad. Unfortunately, there are about 1,000 children in Brevard County’s foster care system that have no heroes in their lives, and those voices go unheard every day.

No child should be forced to grow up too fast. Friends of Children works to improve the lives of children in foster care. We support children who have been removed from their home due to abuse, abandonment and neglect. As a non-profit 501 (C) (3), we fund clothing, beds, bikes, computers, diapers, school supplies, luggage, holiday gifts, duffle bags and other items not provided by government agencies. We can provide these children with some basic opportunities and access to normal childhood activities. We believe in preserving a child’s innocence.

Friends of Children’s support enables the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program to recruit, train, and support volunteers to serve as the “Voice” for abused, abandoned, and neglected children by advocating for their best interests in dependency court proceedings, the only organization that provides this type of caring and objective voice in court. Guardians ad Litem make sure children are not lost in an overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate home or shelter.

About the Guardian ad Litem Program

Thousands of abused, abandoned and neglected children become the subject of judicial proceedings each year in Florida. Their voices are often unheard and best interests overlooked in the complicated and overburdened adversary process. Guardians ad Litem (GAL) are citizens who volunteer to become part of a court program to represent the best interests of an assigned child. The volunteer Guardian ad Litem is a representative for the child before the court, social service agencies and the community. He/she also protects the child during the family crisis, court proceedings, and follows the child’ progress.
