Interested in becoming a Board Member?

The Board of Directors of Friends of Children of Brevard County, Inc. would like to invite you to learn more about becoming a member of our Board of Directors. We are honored by your interest in helping Friends, and we believe that increasing community member participation in our Board of Directors would greatly help support and further our mission.

Friends of Children of Brevard County, Inc is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports and raises funds for local abused children. Thousands of abused and neglected children become the subject of judicial proceedings under Dependency Court each year in Florida. These children are oftentimes removed from their parental homes and placed in relative care or foster homes until the Court decides their future. Their only advocate is the Court-appointed Guardian ad Litem, whose job it is to ensure the welfare of the child and to make recommendations to the Court what is in the child’s best interest.

The children are removed from familial surroundings through no fault of their own. What most of us know as a normal childhood is denied them. They need things like clothing, diapers, food, a bed, school supplies, or things that restore a sense of normalcy to their lives, like a bicycle, summer camp or toys during the Holiday Season. There is a limit to what the State can provide when the children are placed in unlicensed care. So who does, when the money just isn’t there?

We do. Friends of Children of Brevard County fills that gap. We raise funds to purchase the things these children need. The Board of Directors of Friends is volunteer and unpaid. The funds we raise go these children and the program that provides advocates for these children. All donations are tax deductible. But we cannot do this alone; we just don’t have the people-power to staff events, help with outreach, spread the word, and find donors. We need your help. Won’t you join us?

We look forward to seeing you at our next board meeting. Please contact me with any questions you may have. All correspondence is of course strictly confidential.

Sincerely,

Kathy Heron

About the Guardian ad Litem Program

Thousands of abused, abandoned and neglected children become the subject of judicial proceedings each year in Florida. Their voices are often unheard and best interests overlooked in the complicated and overburdened adversary process. Guardians ad Litem (GAL) are citizens who volunteer to become part of a court program to represent the best interests of an assigned child. The volunteer Guardian ad Litem is a representative for the child before the court, social service agencies and the community. He/she also protects the child during the family crisis, court proceedings, and follows the child’ progress.

About Friends of Children of Brevard

Friends of Children funds clothing, beds, bikes, computers, diapers, school supplies, luggage, holiday gifts, duffle bags and other items not provided by government agencies. We also provide these children with some basic opportunities and access to normal childhood activities.
